  5. Acorn's RISC OS 3 Now Available for All
  6.  
  7. Acorn Computers is releasing the latest version of its RISC
  8. operating system - RISC OS 3 - as an upgrade for existing
  9. users.

  11. First installed in Acorn's A5000 computer, RISC OS 3
  12. provides some 300 key enhancements evolved from its
  13. predecessor, RISC OS 2.  Because RISC OS 3 builds upon many
  14. of the key features of its predecessor  it ensures ease of
  15. use and continuity for those switching over to the new
  16. version of the operating system. It offers complete
  17. compatibility with RISC OS 2 and allows the use of the
  18. 2,000-plus titles already available for Acorn's range of
  19. Archimedes computers.

  21. Some of these new advantages include multi-tasking filing
  22. and formatting operations, improvements in the use of the
  23. desktop environment and in the use of iconized windows,
  24. improved printer support, the ability to read DOS-format
  25. discs, support for high density floppy discs, new hot key
  26. support, and the ability to run up to 128 tasks
  27. concurrently.

  29. Twelve fonts are now provided in the 2MB of ROM together
  30. with many of the key applications provided with Acorn's
  31. range of RISC machines including Draw, Paint and Edit. These
  32. applications themselves have been further refined and
  33. improved to increase their versatility.

  35. RISC OS 3 can be fitted to all of Acorn's family of RISC
  36. computers including the Archimedes range and UNIX
  37. workstations. However, the original A305, A310 and A440 (but
  38. not the A440/1) need a simple modification in order to fit
  39. the larger ROMS. This dealer-only upgrade will be available
  40. at the same time as the software upgrade kit.

  42. Acorn's Marketing Director Mike O'Riordan said of the new
  43. upgrade "In line with our policy of offering our customers
  44. the choice of moving up to new technology in a timescale
  45. that suits them, we have ensured that RISC OS 3 is fully
  46. backwards compatible with existing applications designed for
  47. RISC OS 2.

  49. "However", he added, "I am convinced that there are so many
  50. advantages to be gained for existing users to upgrade that
  51. many will choose the early upgrade option."
